Downtown Austin sits between Lady Bird Lake to the south and roughly Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to the north, bordered by I-35 to the east and Lamar Boulevard to the west. The Texas State Capitol, completed in 1888, anchors the northern end of Congress Avenue, the district's central street running down to the lake. Downtown includes the Sixth Street Historic District, the Rainey Street Historic District of converted bungalows, and Austin's convention center. High-rise residential and office towers have been built throughout downtown since the early 2000s, alongside the University of Texas campus at its northern edge. Downtown falls entirely within Austin's full-purpose city limits.
