East Cesar Chavez sits east of I-35, along the north bank of Lady Bird Lake near downtown Austin. Its main commercial street, Cesar Chavez Street, was renamed from East First Street in 1993 to honor the labor and civil rights leader. The neighborhood has long been part of Austin's historically Mexican-American East Side community, with family-owned restaurants, panaderías, and murals along its commercial blocks. Residential streets mix early-20th-century wood-frame houses with newer infill construction built over the past two decades. The area sits within walking distance of the Lady Bird Lake hike-and-bike trail and downtown Austin.
