Hyde Park sits just north of the University of Texas campus, roughly between Guadalupe Street and Duval Street. Developer Monroe Shipe platted it in 1891 as one of Austin's first streetcar suburbs, laid out with narrow lots and a trolley line connecting it to downtown. Much of the neighborhood is a designated historic district, with houses built between the 1890s and 1930s in Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, and Craftsman bungalow styles under mature oak-tree canopies. The Elisabet Ney Museum, housed in the sculptor's former studio, and Shipe Park, named for the neighborhood's founder, sit within its boundaries. Hyde Park is one of Austin's oldest continuously residential neighborhoods.
